Obituary

William L. "Bill" Calderwood of Freeport, IL and formerly of Wheaton, Chicago, and Glenview, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2024, at age 90. Bill was born to the late Lowell and Marjorie (Lerch) Calderwood on July 22, 1933 in Evanston, IL. Bill received his bachelor's degree from Northwestern University and developed a lifelong love of Wildcat football, enjoying season tickets for over 50 years. After graduation from Northwestern, Bill enlisted in the Navy. He completed Officer Candidate School and eventually was deployed to Japan. Serving for the United States Navy was a highlight in Bill's life. Bill returned to Evanston and then settled in Glenview as he began his career as a stockbroker. Bill called it the peak of the industry, thoroughly enjoying the jet-setting trips and the suspense of news delivered via Dow Jones News Ticker. He welcomed three daughters, and they enjoyed weekends in Pentwater, MI, Northwestern football games, and ski trips to the Rockies. Bill eventually moved to La Salle Drive in Chicago, enjoying the city and the lake while actively participating in the Bond Club of Chicago.  In 1990 and 1992, Bill was blessed with two sons and devoted his late adulthood to them. As with his daughters, Bill made sure to pass down the lifelong hobbies of tennis and skiing to his sons, teaching them to ski in Wisconsin and spending many weekends feeding groundstrokes at the Wheaton Sports Center. Bill also coached the boys' basketball teams and kept detailed notes on each of their baseball at-bats, going over any mistakes on the drive to ice cream after the game. Bill moved to Freeport, IL late in life and loved spending time with his grandchildren, attending their sports games, band concerts, and theater performances.

Bill is survived by four of his children; Beth (David) Miller, Sarah (Craig) Thies, JL (Samantha) Calderwood, and Will (Kacy) Calderwood; by his 7 grandchildren; Andrew, Brian, and Christian Miller; Colton and Haley Thies; Willie and Brent Calderwood; by his sister, Colleen Houlahan; and by several beloved nephews and nieces. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Cathy Calderwood, and his sister, Marcy Riba.

At Bill's request, his immediate family will gather privately, in lieu of a memorial service. The family extends their deepest gratitude for the outstanding care and support Bill received through the FHN Hospice team. Contributions in memory of Bill may be directed to FHN Hospice, 773 W. Lincoln Blvd, Suite 403, Freeport, IL 61032
