Verla A. Bicker, 89, of Freeport, passed peacefully on March 4, 2022. She was born on November 4, 1932, on the home farm in Loran Township, Stephenson County, Illinois. Verla was the daughter of Edwin and Agnes (Boeger) Bicker.
She proudly served our country in the U.S. Air Force, during the Korean War. Then Verla helped her parents on the family farm until their passing in the mid-1970s. She moved to Freeport where she happily worked for the Fruth Insurance company for many years, until retirement. She was an avid reader her whole life, and very involved with the local VFW chapter and the Korean War Veterans Association.
Verla is survived by nieces Sharon Meier, Cheryl (Terry) Phillips, Jan (Darrell) Pauley, Pat Fuchs, Kathy (Tim) Larsen, Nancy (Tom) Bussan, Barb (Keith) Souders, Mary Ellen Sturtz and Dawn Ann Elmore. She is survived by nephews Larry (Judy) Buchenau, and Dennis (Terry) Ditsworth. She also has many great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Iola Kniss, Iona Sturtevant, LaVerle Bicker LaVonia Buchenau, Farris Walker and Harleth (Bud) Bicker, and nephews Ron Buchenau, Emerson Bicker, Bobby Sturtevant, Jack Schmelzer, Buddy Schmelzer, and niece Marcia Lobdell.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport on Wednesday, March 9 at 11:00 am, with visitation at 10:30 am. Arrangements are being handled by Schwarz funeral Home in Freeport.
In lieu of flowers, Verla requested donations be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
