Richard James Unger, 61, of Freeport, IL, passed away on October 21, 2025 at Freeport Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was born on March 22, 1964 in Freeport to Father Donald F. Unger and Mother Kathryn E. (Hurt) Unger. He was a graduate of Sterling High School in Sterling, IL. He worked commercial construction for various companies across the country.

Survivors include his son Patrick Unger of Douglasville, GA, daughter Allyson Shipley of Valpo, IN, brothers: David & Mark Unger of Freeport, IL, sister Mary Peace of Loves Park, IL, and sister Dorothy McConnell of Rock Falls, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents Donald Unger & Kathryn (Hurt) Unger, of Carrollton, GA, brother Alan Unger of Douglasville, GA, and brother Robert Unger of Rockford, IL.

Richard was a hard worker all his life. He was a kind and gentle person with a great sense of humor. He also enjoyed gathering with family & friends and spending time fishing – anywhere with anyone. There are no words to express how much he will be missed.

A private graveside service will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Morris, IL.
