In loving memory of Patricia A Kummer (1931–2023)
Patricia A Kummer, 92, of Freeport, peacefully passed away on December 17, 2023. Born on May 10, 1931, in Freeport, IL, to Ralph Sr Smith and Margaret(Hanley) Smith, she graduated from Aquin in 1949. Patricia devoted over 50 years to education, embarking on her impactful journey at St. Mary's Catholic School in Freeport, IL, and later serving as Vice Principal at St. Mary's, Sacramento. There, she passionately taught middle school math and science for three decades. Affectionately known as "Kummer the Bummer," she earned three nominations for the prestigious Who's Who of Teachers, a testament to her exceptional contributions.
On July 1, 1972, Patricia married the love of her life, Carl Kummer. Beyond her dedication to education, she was an avid reader, cherished travel experiences, and found joy in gambling. Her adventures took her to an outdoor mass with the pope in the Vatican, a heartwarming journey in Ireland connecting with her mother's family, and countless family trips to the Caribbean. In retirement, she formed lasting bonds with a group of ladies, sharing monthly lunches, shopping excursions, and delightful day trips.
Patricia is survived by her sister, Mary Margaret Galway, nieces Dawn(Steven) Levins and Theresa Galway, nephews Mark (Kristi) Smith, Patrick Galway, and John Wilhelms, great nieces Tessa (Tony) Kempel, and Alaina (Ryan Ickes) Levins, great nephew Robert Levins, and brother-in-law Leon Wilhelms.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Carl Kummer, brothers John Smith, Ralph Jr Smith, brothers-in-law William Galway and Jess Brazeal, sisters Sheila Brazeal, Maureen Wilhelms, and sister-in-law Rita Smith.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday December 27, 2023, from 4-6 PM at Schwarz Park Blvd Chapel, 608 S Park Blvd., Freeport, IL 61032. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
