On July 23, 1937, a beautiful little boy was born to Ruby and David Obenchain. Their son grew up to be a caring, proud, honest, hardworking, brave, and faithful upstanding quiet man, who was my husband for 35 years.

From a previous marriage, 3 wonderful children were born: Laura Giacalone of Beloit, WI, Lonna Brodde of Freeport, IL, and Lamont Obenchain of Chicago, IL. On August 8, 1986, he married Garnet McCurdy and inherited 5 stepchildren: Scott Gerke (Kera), Shelli Williams (Gordy), Chris Gerke (Wendy), Shaun McCurdy (Beth), and Jeff McCurdy. He was a wonderful stepfather going above and beyond most stepfathers would do and setting a wonderful example for all.

He was employed by the Chrysler Corp. for 30 years and worked odd farming jobs as needed. He also enjoyed his grandchildren, of which he had 13 beautiful ones. There is also 23 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sisters: Marilyn Devries and Carol Pech. He also inherited 2 brothers-in-law and 3 sisters-in-law who were always ready to help Leon especially on card nights. Leon was a card shark and loved to win.

He was an avid farm toy collector, especially Allis Chalmer toys who he grew up with. He thrived on garage sales, flea markets, and any place he could find toys. He was also an avid woodworker and had fun making baby cradles, and it had to be perfect. As his health declined, he was sad he couldn't continue, but still tried.

He had many special friends, including Bishop James Wade and neighbor Ellen Lutzenkirchen. He struggled with numerous bouts of cancer, but always did his best to survive them until now. He just couldn't go on. His wife Garnet was always by his side even though he remained independent.

He will be missed by all but will be in God's hand and finally at peace with no pain, for that we are grateful. Thanks to all who helped us through this journey. Dr. Schleich and office staff, St. Croix Hospice, and UW physician Dr. Sam Lubner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and 2 great-grandsons Jackson and Leo.

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain.

A visitation will be held on Friday November 12, 2021 at the Eastgate Christian Church in Freeport, IL from 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM, with funeral service following at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

A memorial has been established in his name.
