Obituary

John "Jack" Dougherty, 93, died on Monday January 22, 2024 at Ascension Living Center. He was born in Freeport, IL on October 23, 1930 to Bill and Loretta (McGrath) Dougherty. Jack attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from Aquin High School, class of 1948.

On June 6, 1959 he married Judy Stukenberg at St. Joseph Church in Freeport. After high School he worked at Burgess Battery Co.

Jack served in the US Army, 1951-1953, serving in Austria during the Korean War. After his time overseas he went to work at the US Post Office in Freeport, was temporary postmaster for a year in Rock City, IL, before retiring in 1992 after 37 years.

He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Church, belonged to the Germania Club and VFW, delivered meals on wheels, and was a member of the Aquin Boosters.

Jack enjoyed volunteering his time working at Aquin sport events. He was a ticket taker for over 45 years at Aquin. He loved watching sports: Notre Dame, Cubs, Bears and Bulls. He greatly enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids sporting events. Jack was a pitcher on a Freeport slow pitch team, and also played golf and enjoyed bowling.

After retirement he liked going to coffee get-togethers with his post office and golfing buddies. Mostly he was proud of his Irish heritage and talked often of his travels in Europe. He loved visits with his great-grandchildren.

Jack is survived by his sister, Pat Carey, sisters-in-law, Beverly and Irene; his daughter Julie (Bill) Glick of Freeport, son John (Lauri) Dougherty, of Breeze, IL, grandchildren: Meghan (Brandon) Busker of Pecatonica, Erin (Eli) Morhardt of Janesville, WI, John (Katie) Dougherty of Bloomington, IL, and Matthew Dougherty of Austin, TX; his cherished 7 great-grandchildren: Declan, Colin, Alannah, Xavier, Jaxon, Nathaniel, and Joshua.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Judy in 2012, brothers Bill, Earl, Leo, Leon, Bob, Jim, and Kenneth.

Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday January 27, 2024 at 10 AM, at St. Mary's Church, 704 S. State Ave., Freeport, IL, with Rev. Matthew McMorrow officiating. Friends may call at the church at 9 AM until time of service. Burial in Calvary Cemetery in Freeport.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to St. Mary's or St. Joseph churches.
