Gordon Eugene Sheffey, Pearl City, IL passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at Lena Living Center following a short illness. He was born on May 5, 1936 in Freeport, IL the son of Harry and Ruth (Dresser) Sheffey.
Gordon graduated from Pearl City High School in 1954 where he participated in basketball, baseball, and chorus. Gordon proudly served his country in the Army National Guard for 6 years. He shared many stories about this time and the escapades he had with Lee Kuhlmyer and
Neil Dittmar.
Gordon was a lifelong farmer, an occupation he truly loved. He farmed with his brother Darrell until his death in 2008. Gordon passed along his passion for farming to his son, Scott, who continues the legacy he and Darrell started along with Darrell's son, Steve. Gordon was happy to see the work they began will be continued into the next generations.
Gordon married Judy Henze on August 13, 1961 at Second Presbyterian Church, Freeport, IL. Gordon was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Pearl City, IL. Gordon served on the Loran Township Mutual Board for 40 years. Gordon enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren's sporting events, especially watching them play basketball. Gordon and Darrell pursued a hobby as race car owners and had a successful run at the Freeport Racetrack with the help of Joe Finn, their driver. Gordon enjoyed spending time with friends playing Euchre, windshield farming with Jim Brinkmeier and Carl Keltner, and eating out. Gordon was a great storyteller and had many sayings he was known for.
Gordon is survived by his daughter, Wendy (Mike) Jensen of Lena, IL and son, Scott (Nicole) Sheffey of Pearl City, IL. Five grandchildren, Dr. Katie (Eric) Lutz of Portland, OR, Kyle Jensen of Davenport, IA, Jase, Levi, and Wade Sheffey all of Pearl City, IL. Sister-in-law, Reita Sheffey of Pearl City and several nieces and nephews.
Gordon was preceded in death by his spouse, Judy in 2013, parents, brother, Darrell Sheffey, twin sister, Norma Hoffman, and nephew, Jason Strohecker.
Funeral services will be at 10 AM on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Pearl City, IL with Pastor Shellie Knight officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, August 6, 2021 at the church from 4-7 PM. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport, IL. A memorial fund has been established in his name.
