Elizabeth (Elsie) J. Corrigan
Elizabeth Josephine Corrigan, 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at FHN after a brief illness. Born in Freeport on May 22, 1928, the youngest of four children born to James and Pearl (Wilson) Sullivan. Elizabeth graduated from Warren High School in 1946. She continued her education at Edgewood College in Madison, WI. and earned a degree in elementary education.
Elizabeth married Robert L. Corrigan on June 9, 1956 at St. Anne's Church in Warren, IL. They had four children, Brigid, Bob, Kate, and John.
She taught third grade in the Freeport School District #145. Elizabeth applied and received a Federal Grant and Sabbatical to attend Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa where she earned a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) as a Reading Specialist and Supervisor in 1971. After graduation, she taught in the Title I Remedial Reading Program in Freeport. She attended summer school classes which sponsored traveling trips to Europe to study England's and France's Reading Programs. Elizabeth continued teaching as a remedial reading teacher and received a state certificate honoring her 37 years as a classroom teacher and Reading Specialist.
Elizabeth was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, a Perpetual Adoration Adorer, and a member of the choir for many years. She was a volunteer for several benevolent and civic organizations including St. Vincent's, St. Joseph's Senior Home as Sacristan and Eucharistic Minister, and Amity's Attic.
Elizabeth is survived by two children John Corrigan; Kate (Bob) Stroup; grandchildren, Bridget Stroup (Zak Krauss), Jessica Stroup (Steve Antos), Garrett Stroup (Mallow McKusick), Patrick Corrigan (Bre Mapston); and many nieces and nephews.
Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, James, Katheryn and Lawrence; husband, Robert (1999); daughter, Brigid (2015); and son, Bob (2015).
Funeral mass will be on Saturday, March 4th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1400 Kiwanis Drive in Freeport, IL.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church until time of mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Freeport or any charitable organization of your choice.
