E. Don Diehl, 93, formerly of Cumberland, MD, died at home in Redding, CA on Monday, January 9, 2023.
Born November 18, 1929 in Ellerslie, MD, son of Earl and Anna Amelia Diehl. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Donnie Diehl and Timothy Diehl; two sisters, Inez Skinner and Betty Jane Ashenfelter, three brothers Vance Diehl, Fritz Diehl and Paul Diehl. One nephew, Rev. Dennis Paul Diehl, KHS.
Don Diehl was a graduate of Alleghany High School, Cumberland. Following high school Don served his nation proudly as a United States Marine. He married Virginia Bennet on August 29, 1955. Don started working at Kelly-Springfield Tire Company building tires. He eventually moved into plant operations and moved to Freeport, IL in 1963 when a new plant was opened. He returned to Cumberland in late 1980's working in the corporate offices. Don retired from Kelly-Springfield after more than forty years of service.
Don was known for his friendly nature, convincing faith, as well as his service to the community. Over the years he served on many boards and helping organizations, including the Freeport Chamber of Commerce where he served as an Ambassador, a Board member of Freeport Memorial Hospital, the board of the United Way of Northwest Illinois and was an active Mason in the Blue Lodge and Scottish Rite. What was most important to Don was his family and his faith in Jesus Christ. Don served on the Church Council of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Freeport and the Board of Grace Community Church in LaVale, Maryland where he participated in every aspect of the life of the church, including leading missions for children through Shoes for Orphan Souls and Operation Christmas Child. He was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Virginia of Redding, CA: a son, Rev. Steve Diehl and his wife Kristi of Redding, CA; daughter, Debra Groves and her husband Rev. Mark of Brenham, TX; four grandchildren, Colter of Redding CA; Kimberly Nemier and husband Elijah of Columbia, MD; Zachary Diehl and wife Kerry of Columbia, MD; and Devin Groves and wife Cassie of Newport, KY; and four great-granddaughters and three great-grandsons. One brother, Bruce and his wife, Annie of Columbus, OH, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Cremation rites have been accorded and a private memorial service will be held at a later date with interment at Lybarger Cemetery, Madley, PA. Memorials may be sent to: Mercy Hospice, 1544 Market St., Redding, CA 96001.
