Donald Wayne
Slick
Jan 13, 1941 — Mar 16, 2021
On March 16, 2021 Donald Wayne Slick followed his path to eternal life at age 80. Don will be dearly missed by his wife of 30 years, Merille and his children Carey and John (Jodi). Six grandchildren who will miss their Papa are Natalie, Casey, Shane, Trisha, Shannon (Travis) and Rachel. Don has been blessed with 5 great grandchildren. He also enjoyed spending time with Merille's crew which includes 3 children, their spouses and 6 additional grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Joan, and two brothers James and Randy.
Don was born January 13, 1941 in Mt Carroll, the son of Floyd Slick and Erma (Ethridge) Slick. He attended country grade schools and graduated in 1958 from Mt Carroll High School. He attended Lincoln Barber College in Moline Il. Slick's Barber Shop, a staple in the community, operated for nearly 50 years. Don also farmed and later enjoyed his hobby of antique tractors. Orange became his true color as he brought old Allis Chalmers back to life. These tractors were a part of local Fourth of July parades as well as lengthy travel to North Dakota and Canada. Annual Fourth of July gatherings on the farm were the biggest event of the year for him. The tractor shop doubled as the think tank for the Dirty Dozen, a special group of friends who met weekly. An avid sports fan, Don cheered for the Chicago Bears and Cubs along with great support for the Mt Carroll Hawks through the years. Lifelong resident of Mt Carroll and member of Berreman Church of God, Don and his wife had recently relocated to Kentucky.
A visitation will be held from 12:00-2:00 p.m. with funeral service to follow on Saturday March 20 at Russell Frank Funeral Home in Lanark, Illinois. Burial will take place at Lanark Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established in Don's memory.
