Donald E. Duke, Jr., 85, of Freeport, IL, passed away peacefully at his home on January 3, 2025. He was born on August 11, 1939 in Everett, Washington, to parents Donald E. Duke, Sr. and Margurite "Rock" Duke. He served in the US Marine Corps from May 1959 to June 1965. He married Molly Vernia on October 22, 1976 in Rockford, IL. He worked for ComEd most of his life.
Survivors include his children: Karen A. Vernia (Guy Salvato), Michael Vernia, and Patrick H. (Anne) Vernia; grandkids: Chris, Amanda, Jordan, Nathan, and Casey; great grandkids: Ryan, Marley-Sevi, Meredeth, Jaleah Dock, Misoun Fultz, Khalil Fultz, and Marcus Fultz; sister-in-law and close friend Edith, and sister-in-law Mary.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bill, Lynn and Jerry, and his best friend / love of his life, Mary "Molly" Duke.
The family would like to give special thanks to close friend Kristine for all of her help, grandson Nathan "Nate" Vernia for everything you did for him, and FHN Hospice, for their care and compassion.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday February 8, 2025, from 2PM - 6PM, at the Freeport Eagle's Club, 1200 W. Galena Ave in Freeport, IL.
A memorial has been established in his name for the Wounded Warrior Project.
